Her filmography is almost entirely based on being one of the bizarre “Dreamgirls” in the repertory company of cult director John Waters. Still, there’s nothing gross or shocking about the bizarre beauty of Cookie Mueller. Not even a vulgar visionary such as Waters could make this Cookie less than appetizing. Her wild hair and heavy mascara added slutty sex appeal to epics including Female Trouble (1974) and Polyester (1981). Don’t feel bad about her kinky coupling that proves fatal to a fowl in Pink Flamingos (1972), either; Waters assures us that the chicken was promptly plucked and eaten afterwards. Mueller’s offscreen life was equally daring, as she traveled the world and kept journals of her strange adventures, right up to her death from AIDS-related illness in 1989.
